About This Study

Key details about the cardiovascular prevention research study

Study Purpose
Cardiovascular Disease Prevention

This clinical trial investigates preventive strategies for people with diabetes, prediabetes, or metabolic syndrome who are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease but have not yet experienced a heart attack or stroke.

Study Status
Now Enrolling

We are actively enrolling qualified participants at three California locations: Tarzana, Northridge, and Huntington Park. Early intervention can make a significant difference.

What's Included
Comprehensive Heart Evaluation

All participants receive a no-cost heart scan (CT scan), complete heart health evaluation, cardiologist-guided care, and all study-related assessments throughout the trial.

Who Can Join
Men 55+ & Women 65+ with Diabetes/Prediabetes

Adults meeting age criteria with type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, or metabolic syndrome who have not had a previous heart attack or stroke may be eligible.

Understanding Cardiovascular Risk

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, and people with diabetes, prediabetes, or metabolic syndrome face significantly higher risk. These conditions affect how the body processes sugar and fat, leading to damage of blood vessels and increased likelihood of heart attack and stroke.

The good news is that early detection and prevention can make a dramatic difference. By identifying risk factors before a cardiac event occurs, preventive treatments and lifestyle interventions can significantly reduce the chance of heart attack, stroke, and other serious complications.

Clinical trials like this one are essential to finding better ways to identify who is at highest risk and determining which preventive strategies are most effective in protecting heart health.

What is Metabolic Syndrome?

A cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels that together increase cardiovascular disease risk.

Prediabetes & Heart Risk

Prediabetes means blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Even at this stage, damage to the heart and blood vessels can begin.

Why Prevention Matters

Research shows that interventions before a first heart attack or stroke can dramatically reduce risk and improve long-term outcomes. Early action saves lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about the study and cardiovascular prevention

What is a clinical trial?+
A clinical trial is a research study that evaluates the safety and effectiveness of new medical treatments or prevention strategies. All clinical trials follow strict scientific and ethical standards and are overseen by independent review boards to protect participants.
Why should I consider participating?+
Participating gives you access to a comprehensive heart evaluation including a free CT scan, cardiologist-guided care, and close monitoring of your cardiovascular health. You'll contribute to research that could help prevent heart attacks and strokes in millions of people with diabetes and prediabetes.
Is participating in a clinical trial safe?+
Yes. Participant safety is the top priority. This study is conducted under strict protocols approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) and follows FDA and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. You'll be closely monitored by cardiologists throughout, and can withdraw at any time.
What is metabolic syndrome?+
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together β€” including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels. Having metabolic syndrome increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
How does diabetes increase cardiovascular risk?+
Over time, high blood sugar can damage blood vessels and the nerves that control the heart. People with diabetes are also more likely to have other conditions that increase cardiovascular risk, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. This is why cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among people with diabetes.
What is prediabetes?+
Prediabetes means your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The good news is that lifestyle changes and preventive care can often reverse prediabetes.
What does participation in this study involve?+
Participation involves regular visits for cardiovascular monitoring and preventive care. You'll receive a baseline CT heart scan, ongoing assessments, and cardiologist-guided treatment. All study-related care is provided at no cost. The study team will walk you through the full schedule before you commit.
What is a cardiac CT scan?+
A cardiac CT scan is a painless, non-invasive test that uses X-rays to create detailed images of your heart and blood vessels. It can detect calcium buildup in arteries (coronary calcium score), which is an important marker of cardiovascular disease risk. This test typically costs hundreds to thousands of dollars but is provided free as part of the study.
Can I continue seeing my regular doctor?+
Yes. We strongly encourage you to maintain your relationship with your primary care physician and endocrinologist. With your permission, we will coordinate with your existing healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care. It's important that all your doctors are informed of your participation.
Why are there age requirements?+
The age requirements (men 55+, women 65+) reflect the populations at highest risk for cardiovascular disease who haven't yet had a heart attack or stroke. Research shows that preventive interventions are most impactful in these age groups when combined with diabetes, prediabetes, or metabolic syndrome.
What if I've had other heart problems but not a heart attack?+
You may still be eligible. The study excludes people who have had a heart attack or stroke, but other heart conditions don't automatically disqualify you. Our medical team will review your full cardiac history during screening to determine if the study is appropriate for you.
Do I need to have all three conditions (diabetes, prediabetes, and metabolic syndrome)?+
No. You only need to have one of these conditions to potentially qualify: type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, or metabolic syndrome. Many people have more than one, but having just one along with meeting the age requirements may make you eligible.
Can I leave the study if I change my mind?+
Yes. Participation is entirely voluntary. You have the right to withdraw at any time, for any reason, without penalty. Simply notify the study team. We may request an optional final safety visit to ensure you have appropriate follow-up care.
Will my personal and medical information stay confidential?+
Yes. Your information is fully protected under HIPAA regulations. Your personal identity will never appear in any study publications. All research data is de-identified and cannot be traced back to you. Only authorized study staff have access to your identifiable records.
Who oversees this study?+
This study is reviewed and continuously monitored by an Institutional Review Board (IRB), an independent committee that protects participant rights and well-being. The study also follows FDA regulations and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.
